Hormones and women's reproductive health: when is it time for a check-up?
Published on 1 October 2026 · Dr. Medical Clinic & Lab
Hormones are among the most important regulators of the female body. Hormones and reproductive health are closely linked: even a small imbalance can affect your cycle, fertility and everyday well-being.
What do hormones affect?
When reproductive health is disrupted by a hormonal imbalance, the signs often show up in your cycle and everyday well-being. A hormonal imbalance can affect:
- the menstrual cycle – its regularity, length and pain;
- fertility and the chance of pregnancy;
- mood and energy;
- sleep quality;
- skin and hair, such as acne or hair loss.
Hormones and reproductive health: when should you get checked?
- when your cycle is irregular, absent or very painful;
- when you are planning a pregnancy or having difficulty getting pregnant;
- when you have acne, excess hair growth or hair loss with no clear cause;
- when you feel constant fatigue or major mood changes;
- in the period before and after menopause.
Which tests are done?
Depending on the case, the doctor may recommend:
- TSH – for thyroid function, which strongly affects the cycle;
- FSH and LH – the hormones that regulate the ovaries;
- Estradiol and Progesterone;
- Prolactin, and where appropriate AMH for ovarian reserve.
Some of these tests are done on specific days of the cycle – e.g. FSH and LH usually in the first days of the cycle, while progesterone is checked in the second half. When you book, our staff will tell you the right day.
