DHEA-S, prolactin and progesterone: how do they affect fertility and energy?
Published on 1 October 2026 · Dr. Medical Clinic & Lab
DHEA-S, prolactin and progesterone are not the best-known hormones, but they play an important role in fertility, energy and everyday well-being. Here is what each one does and when it is worth checking them.
DHEA-S
DHEA-S is produced mainly by the adrenal glands and influences the production of sex hormones. It affects energy, immunity and mood. High levels in women may be associated with acne, excess hair growth and irregular cycles – often as part of polycystic ovary syndrome.
Prolactin
Prolactin is linked to the menstrual cycle and to milk production. High levels outside pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause irregular cycles, nipple discharge and difficulty getting pregnant. Since stress and fatigue can raise it temporarily, the test is usually done in the morning, at rest.
Progesterone
Progesterone helps stabilize the cycle and is essential for pregnancy, because it prepares the uterus to sustain it. Measuring it in the second half of the cycle shows whether ovulation has occurred.
When are DHEA-S, prolactin and progesterone measured?
- when the cycle is irregular or absent;
- when you have difficulty getting pregnant;
- when there are signs such as acne, excess hair growth or nipple discharge;
- when you feel tired and have mood changes without a clear cause.
Some tests are done on specific days of the cycle, so when you book, our staff will advise you on the right day. The results are interpreted by the doctor, together with your symptoms and other examinations.
