Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) involves an increase in the level of glucose (sugar) in the mother’s blood during pregnancy.
Women with gestational diabetes did not have diabetes before pregnancy. Although insulin levels are high in these women, hormones produced by the placenta prevent insulin from working, and as a result blood sugar levels rise.

Are over 30 years old
Have a family history of this condition
Are overweight
Have previously given birth to a baby weighing over 4 kg
Have had miscarriages
