What is a medical check-up and why should you have one regularly?
Published on 1 October 2026 · Dr. Medical Clinic & Lab
In an increasingly busy world, we often neglect our health until a serious problem appears. Yet a medical check-up – a general health check – is one of the simplest ways to prevent disease and detect any possible problem early.
What is a medical check-up?
A check-up is a planned examination, done even when you feel well. It combines laboratory tests, examinations and a consultation with a doctor, with the aim of assessing your overall health and detecting risk factors in time.
What does a general check-up include?
Depending on age, sex and medical history, the check-up may include:
- Blood tests – complete blood count, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides, liver and kidney function;
- Urinalysis;
- A heart check – ECG and, when needed, an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound);
- Ultrasound examinations – abdominal, thyroid, or breast for women;
- Hormone and vitamin tests, such as thyroid, vitamin D and B12;
- A consultation with the doctor, who explains the results and, if needed, refers you to a specialist.
Why is it important?
- Prevention: early detection of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease and heart problems.
- Easier treatment: when a problem is caught early, it is easier and less costly to treat.
- Peace of mind: knowing that your health is under control.
How often should you have a medical check-up?
For most adults, a check-up once a year is recommended, or as advised by your doctor. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease, more frequent check-ups may be needed.
How to prepare
For most blood tests, fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended (water is allowed). Bring your previous results and a list of the medicines you take.
