What is a heart ultrasound?

The cardiologist places a probe with gel on your chest and sees your heart moving on the screen. This is how the heart chambers, valves, pumping strength and blood flow inside the heart are assessed.

What can it detect?

• weakened heart function
• valve disease (narrowing or leakage)
• thickening or enlargement of the heart walls
• fluid around the heart (pericardium)
• some congenital heart diseases

When is it recommended?

When you have shortness of breath, swollen legs, a heart murmur or long-standing high blood pressure, after a heart attack, or when the cardiologist wants to follow the course of a heart condition.

How to prepare

No special preparation is needed. The examination usually takes about 20–30 minutes, and you can return to your activities right away.
