Bubble echo test in Tirana

A bubble echo test in Tirana is a heart ultrasound with microbubbles that shows whether blood passes between the two atria of the heart, as in the case of a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

What is a bubble echo test?

During a heart ultrasound, agitated saline solution, which forms very small microbubbles, is injected into a vein in the arm. Normally the bubbles pass only through the right side of the heart and are filtered out by the lungs. If they also appear on the left side, this shows that there is a passage between the atria.

When is it recommended?

  • after a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) without a clear cause, especially in young people
  • when a patent foramen ovale (PFO) or atrial septal defect is suspected
  • in certain cases of migraine with aura, based on the doctor’s assessment
  • before certain activities, such as diving, when the doctor recommends it

How it is performed

A small cannula is placed in a vein in the arm and an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) is performed. While the solution is injected, the cardiologist may ask you to bear down as if coughing (the Valsalva maneuver), so that the passage can be seen better. The examination takes about 30 minutes and you can return to your usual activities immediately.

When a more detailed view is needed, the cardiologist may recommend a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE).

How to prepare

No special preparation is needed. Bring previous reports, especially from your neurologist if you have had a stroke, and a list of your medicines.
