What does a cardiology consultation include?

The cardiologist starts by asking about your concerns, your medical history, the medications you take and any heart disease in your family. They then measure your blood pressure, listen to your heart and lungs, and review your previous tests or exams.

When needed, an ECG or echocardiogram can be performed at the same clinic. At the end, the doctor explains the findings and gives you a treatment or follow-up plan.

When is a consultation with a cardiologist recommended?

• fast, slow or irregular heartbeats
• high or unstable blood pressure
• shortness of breath, getting tired easily or swollen legs
• dizziness or loss of consciousness
• high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking or a family history of heart disease

How to prepare

No special preparation is needed. Bring your previous tests and exams, hospital reports and a list of the medications you take. If you measure your blood pressure at home, bring your readings too.
