Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) in Tirana

What is a transesophageal echocardiogram?

A thin probe is passed through the mouth into the esophagus. Before the exam, the throat is numbed with an anesthetic spray to make the procedure easier. On the screen, the cardiologist sees the heart valves, heart chambers and aorta in great detail.

When is it recommended?

• detailed assessment of the heart valves
• looking for blood clots in the heart, e.g. before some arrhythmia treatments
• suspected infection of the valves (endocarditis)
• assessment of defects in the heart walls
• when a standard echocardiogram does not provide a clear enough view

How to prepare

You will usually be asked not to eat or drink for a few hours before the exam. Our staff will give you exact preparation instructions when you book. Tell the doctor about the medications you take and any problems with swallowing.
