Why does a pacemaker need checking?

A pacemaker is a small device placed under the skin that helps the heart maintain a regular rhythm. Even when you feel well, the device should be checked regularly, because:

• the battery runs down over the years and needs to be monitored
• the leads (electrodes) must work properly
• the settings may need adjusting to your needs
• the device records episodes of rhythm disorders that the cardiologist reviews

How a pacemaker check works

The check is painless and usually takes 20–30 minutes. The cardiologist places a reading device over the site of the pacemaker and checks the condition of the battery, the leads and the rhythm recordings. When needed, an ECG is also performed and the device settings are adjusted.

How often is the check done?

The first check is usually done a few weeks after the device is implanted. After that, checks are done regularly, often once or twice a year, depending on the type of device and the cardiologist’s advice.

When to contact the cardiologist without waiting

• dizziness, weakness or fainting
• new shortness of breath or swelling of the legs
• very slow, very fast or irregular heartbeats
• redness, swelling or pain at the site of the device
• hiccups that won’t go away

In case of fainting or severe chest pain, call emergency services immediately on 127.

How to prepare

Bring your pacemaker card, which lists the model and manufacturer of the device, the implantation report and a list of the medicines you take. When you book, tell our staff the model of your device.
