What is an exercise stress test?

During the stress test you walk on a treadmill while the speed and incline gradually increase. Your ECG, blood pressure and heart rate are recorded throughout, under the supervision of a cardiologist.

What is stress echocardiography?

Stress echocardiography combines exercise with a heart ultrasound. The cardiologist compares the movement of the heart walls at rest and after exercise, which helps detect areas that are not receiving enough blood.

When is it recommended?

• chest pain during physical activity
• suspected coronary artery disease
• follow-up after a heart attack or a heart procedure
• assessment before starting sports activity
• assessment of arrhythmias that occur during exertion

How to prepare

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for walking. Avoid heavy meals for a few hours before the test. Ask the cardiologist whether you should continue or stop any medication before the test.
