What are the carotid arteries?

The carotid arteries are the two main arteries that carry blood to the brain. They are located on both sides of the neck. Over the years, plaques made up of fats, cholesterol and calcium can build up in their walls (atherosclerosis). Narrowing or blockage of these arteries can cause a stroke.

How is a carotid Doppler ultrasound performed?

The doctor applies gel and places a probe on your neck, and sees the arteries and the blood flow inside them on the screen. The examination also assesses the other supra-aortic vessels that supply the brain. It takes about 20–30 minutes and is painless and radiation-free.

Who should have it?

• smokers
• people with diabetes
• people with high cholesterol or high blood fats
• people with high blood pressure
• people who are overweight or obese
• people with a family history of stroke or heart disease

The examination is also recommended if you have recurrent dizziness, or when the doctor hears a murmur (bruit) in the neck arteries.

Early diagnosis lowers the risk

When narrowing is detected early, the cardiologist may recommend medication, lifestyle changes and regular follow-up. This lowers the risk of stroke. Cholesterol and blood glucose tests are carried out in our laboratory.

How to prepare

No special preparation is needed. Wear clothes that leave your neck free and bring any previous test results.
